Train Wreck

Western Europe 1944

alt

The Typhoon was designed as an interceptor for use by the R.A.F that was nothing but trouble when she entered service in 1942. The Typhoon was no good as a high altitude fighter, but at low levels it more than held its own with the Luftwaffe fighters. In 1943 things began to change for the better. Bombs and rockets were fitted beneath the wings and her role as a fighter bomber began to take shape. In the months prior to the invasion of Normandy the Typhoon swept the coasts of France and Belgium attacking bridges, rail targets, airfields, and coastal defenses. Throughout the remainder of the war the Typhoons brought their awesome firepower to bear on the Germans. Breaking up armored attacks, 88mm guns, Nebelwerfer's and Tiger tanks. Commonly transport columns, rail locomotives, barges and other river targets were attacked with cannon, rockets, and bombs. The Typhoon was not employed on any other front and without a doubt it was "the" British fighter-bomber of the war.
