By the middle of April 1943, the Axis forces had been pressed into a tight perimeter based on the last hills before the coastal plain around Bizerta and Tunis. A determined defense of these hills had halted the Allied First Army, but the Eighth Army had now pushed up to a position just south of Enfidaville. Allied air power was now predominant. General Alexander gave the Eighth Army the first attempt to break through in the south.
