ARHWEILER 391st BG, 9th AF, MISSION 203-
Presented March 04, 2012
FROM: “391st Bombardment Group, History W.W. II. pp. 83, 84, 87, & others…, Col. Hugh H. Walker, Col. USAF (Ret), “The living and dying are there for all to read. Also there is the privilege of being a part of history. And the privilege of being alive to read it.†Dedicated to the group, crews, and support who my father (1st Lt J. Brice Reed, USAAF) flew with as commander of “The Bum Steerâ€.
“…It was not until 23 December that the weather improved sufficiently for the 391st to fly a mission. The assignment, received for the morning of that day from the 99th Combat Bomb Wing, was to attack the railroad viaduct at Arhweiler, Germany, a blow designed to cut one of the rail lines that was supplying reinforcements and material to the enemy in the Ardennes bulge. At the early morning briefing, the crews were reminded again that enemy fighter opposition could be expected at any time they were over enemy territory. The “expected†occurred about noon on the same day.â€
“…30 planes were sent. Pathfinder mission. No fighter escort. Pathfinder aircraft forced out of formation by intense, heavy, and accurate anti-aircraft fire. 1st box, which had not identified target, made 2nd run while the second box dropped it’s bombs on the target with devastating effect. They were intercepted on this run by approximately 60 enemy fighters and a violent and bitter aerial battle ensued. The 1st box made it’s 2nd run and also hit the objective with devastating effect. Enemy aircraft now swarmed about the combat crew members, attacking from the rear in waves 4 deep and 15 abreast. The crews fought back despite overwhelming odds. Men who were wounded remained at their posts and continued firing as their aircraft were shot out of the sky. Enemy losses were 16 aircraft and 3 probably destroyed and 16 damaged. The 391st lost 16 aircraft and 12 others were badly damaged. There were many wounded. The remaining aircraft returned to base.â€
Our March SEC starts with that very mission…
