Grumman designed and built the TBF Avengers which entered the Pacific war in June of 1942. They made their fighting debut in the Battle of Midway. Assigned to operate from the U.S.S. Hornet was Torpedo Squadron 8. In just two days all of Torpedo Squadron 8 were to perish.
