The Battle Of Voronezh -- June 1942

The Battle Of Voronezh - June 1942

One of the opening moves of the German 1942 summer offensive on the Russian Front was against the city of Voronezh, on the Don river.

Taking and holding this river crossing was intended to secure the northern flank of the Wehrmacht's great thrust south-east along the the Don to the Volga and Stalingrad, and beyond, into the Caucasus oil fields.

This battle would pit General Hermann Hoth's 4th Panzer Army against General Nikolai Fyodorovich Vatutin's Southwestern Front.
