Panic in the Pocket: Cherkassy-Korsun 1944

Panic in the Pocket: Cherkassy-Korsun 1944

On Christmas Eve, 1943, the Red Army began the Dnieper-Carpathian Offensive. Its mission was to drive Germany’s Army Group South west across the Dnieper River and into Ukraine. The first month was very successful as the Red Army was able to push Army Group South west and south across the Dnieper River. From 24 January to 16 February 1944, the Red Army fought an encircled German force comprised of six divisions. There were multiple attempts to break out of the pocket, which stretched from the city of Cherkassy on the banks of the Dnieper River to the small village of Korsun to the southwest. The double envelopment meant that the Germans had no way of reaching supply lines which it desperately needed to maneuver out of the encirclement.

Supply missions were carried out by the Luftwaffe in an attempt to aid the encircled divisions. Ju 52’s were loaded with supplies and flown to the city of Cherkassy and other strategic areas in the pocket. The supplies reached the Ju 52’s via Ju 88’s and other bombers which dropped the supplies over the Korsun airfield. Meanwhile, ground attack runs were being carried out by both sides and the VVS conducted bombing raids of German strongholds within the pocket. This event seeks to simulate the air war and desperate supply missions of the Battle of the Cherkassy-Korsun Pocket.
