RED GUARDS: The Crimea 1944

Within the Soviet Air Force the title Guards carried the ultimate recognition of a regiments courage and achievement. Guards fighter regiments were found in both the Soviet Air Force and the Soviet Naval Air Forces in the Second World War. Each such regiment was given its own banner and many fighters within these units were adorned with the banner on the nose. As the Russians gained experience and better equipment the number of such veteran units expanded. Many of the Russians leading aces flew with or commanded Guards units at some point in their careers. The Luftwaffe pilots came to recognise the markings as an indication of having tangled with veteran fliers especially when compared to the early days of the war.

On the 14th of January 1944 the Russian Leningrad Offensive opened. During the drive to releive the beseiged city the Russian forces in the south conducted offensives of their own. Commencing on the 30th of January the 3rd and 4th Ukranian Fronts launched fresh attacks on Field Marshal von Kliest's Army Group A holding the area north of the Black Sea. Despite tenacious resistance by his forces Kleist was forced to withdraw towards Odessa and elements of the German 6th and 8th Armies were cut off. On 10th April Kleist was forced out of Odessa and the Russian lines advanced almost as far as Brest-Litovsk. The last rail link for the Germans between Poland and southern Russia had been cut in March with the capture of the city of Chernovtsy by 1st Ukranian Front. The abandoned German 17th Army was driven from the Crimea and Sevastopol eventually fell on the 12th of May.

The losses in the Ukraine were a strategic setback for the Germans as the regions rich minerals were needed to supply the Reich. Kliest was amongst the army commanders ousted in the aftermath of the campaign having disobeyed Hitler's no retreat orders in allowing his armies to break out west to avoid being overrun.

This FSO recreates the air battles over the Black Sea region and southern Ukraine in the winter of 1943-44.
