In early 1943, the Japanese forces in the South Pacific were on the defensive, but their aerial strategy did not reflect reality. It was not until May of 1943 that the Air Minister issued the strategy of defense rather than offense. The first manifestation of this new directive was a change of focus from the China-Burma-India Theater to the South Pacific. This included another major change which saw a passing of the torch from the Naval Air Command to the Imperial Army Air Command. With this came the new Type 2 Fighter ‘Hien’ to New Britain and New Guinea. Nicknamed the Tony by the Allies, the Ki-61 made its first full combat debut in the skies over New Britain and New Guinea in June of 1943. By July, the Japanese air force build up had reached its crest as some 1,300 sorties were flown out of Rabaul and Wewak.

Meanwhile, the US Fifth Air Force and Royal Australian Air Force were supporting the Marines and Commonwealth troops on the ground at Lae. The Allies at Lae were thrusting northward through the Markham River Valley. This FSO seeks to simulate some of the most prolific aerial combat of the Pacific Theatre over the skies of New Guinea in July, 1943.
