Adler Krieg-1943

alt

The struggle began: The Luftwaffe now faced it's newest enemy in ever increasing numbers and frequency. The engagements didn't occur in the cold cloudy skys above the English Channel or Coast of France. The German Eagle met it's newest enemy the American Eagle in large numbers for the first time above the hot sands of North Africa. The small initial engagements quickly gave way to larger battles. Starting with Operation Torch in November 1942, the USAAF entered the theater of operations with untested units and green pilots.

In early 1943 the focus of the USAAF was complete defeat of the Luftwaffe in Tunisia. Flying from desert bases in Algeria some of the American pilots in the 31st and 52nd FGs would be flying battle tested Spitfires. While their countrymen in other units did what they could with the best America had to offer at this stage of the war. P-39s and P-400s of 81st and 350th Fighter Groups P-40s of the 57th and 59th Fighter Groups along with P-38s from the 1st 14th and 82nd Fighter Groups.

Together these untested pilots and their aircraft were about to take on some of the cream of the Luftwaffe. Veteran BF-109 units like JG-3 JG-27 JG-51 and JG-53. The fearsome FW-190 Butcher bird flown by JG-2 and venerable BF-110 Zerstörer units like ZG-26. Control of Tunisia would be decided as the German Eagle and American Eagle bloodied their talons on each other above Northwest Africa. This battle would set the stage for two and a half years of bitter aerial combat ahead in Southern and Northern Europe.
