Last Battle Of Kharkov
The Last Battle Of Kharkov - August 1943
Operation "Polkovodets Rumyantsev" (named for 18th century Field Marshal Pyotr Rumyantsev) was a large military offensive conducted by the Soviet Red Army against the German Wehrmacht during August 1943. It began in the aftermath of the Soviet defensive victory over Field Marshal Von Manstein's Army Group South at Kursk in July. It quickly succeeded in pushing back the German defenders. By the end of August, General Vatutin's Voronezh Front and General Malinovsky's South West Front had liberated Kharkov. This was the fourth - and final - time that Kharkov changed hands during WWII. The success of this offensive led to the westward retreat of all German forces in the Ukraine behind the Dnepr river, and set the stage for the Soviet liberation of Kiev later that autumn.
