Tunisia - December 1942

Tunisia – December 1942

In the East, Montgomery’s 8th Army pushed through Libya until brought to a halt by Rommel at the "Mareth Line." As often happened to both sides in North Africa, the 8th Army was at the end a long supply chain, and this stalled its advance.

In the West, the Allied 1st Army had landed in Morocco and Algeria and had rolled through both countries, facing only light Vichy and German resistance.

But Hitler, recalling his own experience in WWI, threatened to turn Tunisia into the Verdun of the Mediterranean.  During the last two months of 1942 the Axis landed nearly a quarter-million additional troops in Tunisia.  Over 400 combat aircraft support those troops.

At the same time, the Allies built up their forces on both sides of the Axis redoubt.  Troops with aerial support were moved forward from Algeria into Tunisia.  The 8th Army was able to rest and refit its air units in western Libya.

Reinforcements have arrived.  The stalemate is about to end.
