Decision at Dunkirk

alt

While the world expected a German invasion of France, no one expected the Germans to advance like they did after May 10th 1940. In eleven days the German army had captured Luxembourg and the Netherlands, smashed through the Ardennes Forest and raced to the Somme Estuary. In doing so they surrounded approximately 400,000 Allied troops of the Belgian, British, and French forces in what had become the Dunkirk pocket.

Most of the BEF were still in the French town of Lille, nearly 40 miles from Dunkirk when the pocket closed on May 21st. Three days later on May 24 th  the infamous decision to halt the German panzer armies was just what the BEF needed to plan and withdraw for the evacuation. The War Office decision came on the 25th, and the official announcement by Churchill came the next day although the full extent of the dire situation was not fully known to the British public.

On May 27th the evacuation began with the rescue of 7,669 men. When the Luftwaffe launched its first major assault on the evacuation on the 29th the Allies had rescued nearly 50,000 more troops from the harbor and the beaches. The evacuation would continue until June 4th when 26,000 French soldiers would be evacuated, leaving nearly 40,000 behind forced to surrender to the Germans. In all, 338,226 would be evacuated from Dunkirk in Operation Dynamo.

This FSO will be set during the encirclement and evacuation of the British Expeditionary Forces in France, 1940.

DESTROYERS

Destroyers will be scored in a different way this FSO. To add a different element in scoring, the number of Destroyers surviving at the end of the frame will count as troops rescued. Each Destroyer represents 12,527 men rescued or left behind in France. Each frame will have 12 Allied Destroyers in the Evacuation zone. These Destroyers will not be allowed to leave the Evacuation Zone which is 12, 10 - 13, 10 - 13, 11. All Destroyers can be attacked and destroyed every frame and will remain down once sunk for the rest of the frame.

Destroyer Scoring:

100% = 450,968 Troops Rescued = All 36 DDs survive/0 DDs Sunk.
75%   = 338,226 Troops Rescued = 27 DDs survive/9 DDs Sunk. (Historical number rescued and actual Destroyers lost)
50%  = 225,484 Troops Rescued =  18 DDs survive/18 DDs Sunk.
25% =  112,742 Troops Rescued = 9 DDs survive/27 DDs Sunk.
00% = 0 Troops Rescued = 0 DDs Survive/36 DDs Sunk

Ace Missions:

Each side will have one mandatory Ace mission per frame. These frames will represent notable pilots of the Battle of France and the Evacuation of Dunkirk. One pilot from each side will designated an "Ace" Pilot. They will be scored as follows.

Ace Pilot = 20 Points
Ace Pilot Kills = 20 Points

So for example if an Ace Pilot is shot down they are worth 20 points to the other side. Like wise, every victory an Ace Pilot achieves they will be rewarded 20 points.
