Fiery Sky / Frigid Sea
Â
Operation Tungsten North Sea 1944
Â
The Admiralty and Commander-in-Chief had decided that the Fleet Air Arm should attack the Battleship KMS Tirpitz early in April, as soon as the aircraft carrier Victorious had completed her post-refit trials and the date of 4th April 1944 was chosen. The attack was code-named Operation "Tungsten". Six carriers were involved using a wide array of Fleet Air Arm aircraft. Corsairs Hellcats Martlets and Seafires along with Barracuda Torpedo bombers. Although heavily damaged, the Tirpitz was not sunk. Luftwaffe reaction to the attack was minimal. Follow up strikes Operation Planet and Operation Brawn were scheduled for late April and Early May, but were canceled because of bad weather.
Â
Fiery Sky/Frigid Sea recreates the situation off Norway during the Spring of 1944. In this case the weather is just good enough for carrier operations. Operation Tungsten as well as Operation Planet and Brawn are carried out. The Royal Navy must not only attack the Tirpitz but also disrupt the Kriegsmarine's and Luftwaffe's ability to retaliate against the fleet by striking satellite ports and bases. In turn the Luftwaffe must protect the Tirpitz and German military installations as well as strike back at the Royal Navy.
